Why I usually sneer in photos of me... [Jul. 18th, 2009|11:55 am]

I look like a goof, right? right?

Ya know what'd be cool? If y'all posted a picture of yourself smiling in this entry. Maybe it'll help my confidence in smiling.

Food For Thought [Jul. 18th, 2009|10:48 am]

This is why I put one foot in spirituality:

This quote I heard yesterday:

If you talk to God, you're praying.
If God talks to you, you're a schizophrenic.

Damn good point.

THE ARTIST ONE YEAR BEFORE 40 [Jul. 17th, 2009|06:12 pm]

jaymarcy
I'll likely do one of them strange retrospectives most people do when they hit a "significant" age number like 40 next year, but I'll do a brief one now.
So, 39. Huh. Feels like 38. Same problems, same life, same everything.
Weird to think it's been twenty years since I was accepted into Sheridan College's "Art Fundamentals" program as I began my misguided pursuit of Animation as a career choice, and I say that with no irony. It was misguided, considering just how plain awful I was back then. I could see the college money counters laughing as they took my cheque knowing there was no way in Hell I'd see the school a year later for Animation.
I continued to soldier on though, knocking out a plethora of mini comics featuring my superhero spoof character PowerWus, then moving on to the now fairly comfortable autobio genre in my perhaps equally misguided cartooning career.
I've done some great books I feel, and hope to have a slew of books to come, some way, somehow. 39 is just a number, right? It's what you do in life that makes the mark, I suppose, and if I've affected any of you in some positive way through my comics or through my being in your lives, then maybe I've done some of whatever it is we feel we need to do on this improbable mudball with breathable atmosphere.
Thanks to all who wished me a happy birthday. it means a lot, believe me.

is going through so much, with being ultimately distractable and strssed out (combined w/ cold sweats, tired (carrying too many books) .. that I actually asked a friend if she had any Ritalin (she didn't) or Klonopin (she did, but I ultimately chose not to take it). This is not good. Not because .. well, many people I know are on prescription drugs, but am not about to take a statistical survey.. but, my issue is that no matter what one does, they can be considered less-independent, because of their usage .. I don't know if that's true, because my friends who are, are at least as independent as the ones that aren't.. more to the point, I mostly see people who take presciption medications, continue to take them, and (looking @ my grandmother, and her twenty-pill-a-day (or so) routine .. it isn't her fault) .. I might well be heading in the pill direction someday, but hoping to be delaying it, as much as possible .. My friend + co - model, who passed away last year, apparently, "took Advil and other over-the-counter medications as though they were candy." Okay; so that's a painkiller, but I've only taken that, like, one-or-two pills, at a time, and only when the need was dire. Dire, as in, "I can't go to work (or even move) because of this PMS," or picturing the hammer of of Athena coming through Zeus's head, because of a headache!!
Anyway, the woman who passed away was never autopsied, because she had specified in her will that she need a proper Jewish burial, for which an actual autopsy (an inspection of the body) would be forbidden.

The point is that I don't quite feel like myself when on certain substances .. pot is uncomfortable, and I've had hallucinations from over-the-counter couch medications.
(Just went and took Dayquil, for that matter ..
So maybe will be able to go and write that paper, now?!?).

I'm currently in tracktown, USA; also known as Eugene, Oregon; and not able to enjoy as much of it as I'd like with my new friend the stress fracture. However, I'm coloring, designing, and reachable by email--with the exception of this weekend when I'll be on the Rogue River and painting up a storm.

I'll be back to NYC just in time to miss out on all the concerts in the park. :/

North Vs. South 2009 [Jul. 16th, 2009|01:07 pm]

scratchtasia
[music |Eleni Mandell]

The North Vs. South Music Festival lineup is listed on the Davey's Uptown calendar now. They're going to operate two stages in two rooms at Davey's, which should work out OK as long as soundchecking doesn't bleed into the sets happening in the other room. Maybe they should go to the Crossroads and explore the use of the Brick, Czar Bar, and Crosstown Station--all easily within walking distance of each other--but I'm not on the planning committee. Anyway, the festival offers some promising highlights.

On Thursday night, August 20, Grant Hart is the big name, playing late. I'm also looking forward to the Service Industry (from Austin), which features ex-Cher UK leader Mike McCoy, the local band Red Kate, and Minneapolis pop band the Hard Left (if they're on the final schedule--there's a question mark by their name). I also want to catch the second show of Faster Horses, the new band started by Tony Ladesich of Pendergast and Sandoval. They're listed as "the Masses," an earlier tentative name for the band.

On Friday night, August 21, I most want to see Austin's Sally Crewe and the Sudden Moves, who scrapped a recently scheduled gig here.

And on Saturday night, August 22, I will be thrilled to see the awesome Minnesota band the Magnolias, as well as Austin's excellent Grand Champeen, St. Paul's smoking Little Man, and Minnesota folk duo the Bitter Spills.

I had heard that Jim Crego would be doing a set, but I don't see him on the schedule, which is a major bummer. I'll have to find out more about that. And I'll have to check out some of the other acts on MySpace to decide if I want to see them. But even if I don't find any more, I'm happy to have this annual injection of talent from the far ends of I-35 into our local scene.

And then there's this:

Lost in Translation (Dahlia Lithwick, Slate): "It's easy to look at Sarah Palin as an iconic feminist, a path-breaking working mother, or noble rabble-rousing populist. But when the dust settles, the lesson may be that she was simply a woman who made no sense."

Flashback: Palin Said That Women Complaining About "Excess Criticism" Don’t "Do Us Any Good" (Think Progress)

Franken's First Move: Co-Sponsoring the Employee Free Choice Act (Talking Points Memo)

Coal-Loving Missouri Senator McCaskill Doesn't Think Strong Climate Bill Will Pass Senate (Treehugger)

The City Notifies Wal-Mart That One of Its Dead Stores Is a Nuisance (David Martin, The Pitch)

Facebook's Identity Crisis: Too Many Old People (PC World)

The Dong Show: Top 10 Moments in Male Full-Frontal (Salon): "In popular culture, and movies in particular, there's been a rather conspicuous double standard. Sure, boobs and vaginas are great, but where, egalitarians might ask, are all the penises?"

My very favorite working comic strip artist, Richard Thompson, creator of the absolutely wonderful Cul De Sac, revealed today that he has Parkinson's disease.

I've met Richard, and he is a sweet guy. He's also going to be a special guest this year at Comic Con, which I won't be attending. I'm currently kicking myself because I'm missing so many, many people I want to see, but I would have especially loved to attend Richard's spotlight panel (Thursday at 4 PM). You should go, if you're around. I'm sure his sly wit and daft sense of humor will make for a great time.

To the Temple of Large Sizes [Jul. 15th, 2009|07:09 pm]

mr_sadhead
Went out to Renton, to attend some Worksource seminars. There are some big people in big cars out there. My bus let me off in front of an abandoned auto dealership, and as I walked toward my destination the guy crossing the street with his son and wife threatened to hit one of them, I didn't look back to see which one.

The Golden Triangle of Fast Food is what I found myself standing in the middle of -- to the one side: a combined KFC / A&W. To the other: Popeye's Chicken and Biscuits. Up ahead: a chinese food buffet. I should explain that neither A&W and Popeye's field franchises in the Seattle city limits, for some reason. I have long dreamed of eating again at either. So why did I go to the chinese food buffet?

Which wasn't so bad; I loaded up on broccoli chicken and foo young and cheese puffs. Then walked to the Worksource, where a garrulous nerdboy wasted ten minutes of our class time telling us what we already all knew, and the instructor didn't stop him. I would have shut him down at least two minutes into his ramble.

Walking back to my bus stop, I saw a dachshund running in traffic. His owner screamed at him from the car wash: "ROWDY! Damn you, get over here!" Rowdy, for that seemed to be his name, ran back to the owner, who picked him up by the collar and hoicked him into the back seat of the van. And I caught my bus and went home.
